Rethymnon is het departement naast Chania en bedekt een groot deel van het midden van Kreta. Het departement Rethymnon kenmerkt zich door het Psiloritisgebergte, de helderblauwe zee, de oude beschaving metveel byzanthijnse kerken en kloosters en een prachtige natuur. De stad Rethymnon is gebouwd op het schiereiland aan de noordkust en heeft zich parallel met het prachtige 13 kilometer lange zandstrand ontwikkeld. De Venetiaanse haven met de vuurtoren is een mooie plaats om iets te drinken of te eten. De stad Rethymnon heeft veel historische trekpleisters zoals het Fortezza, de Rimondi fontein, het archeologisch museum, de Metropolis kerk, het volkskundig museum en enkele moskeeen.
Een zeer interessante kloof in dit departement is de Koutaliotiko kloof. Dit is een zware maar zeer mooie wandeling (in departement Rethymnon). Op sommige plaatsen gaat de tocht door water dat tot knie- of heuphoogte kan komen. De tocht begint vlakbij het dorp Frati (aan de hoofdweg) en duurt circa 4,5 uur en kan alleen in juli en augustus gelopen worden. Het eindstation is het prachtige Preveli strand met palmbomen.
De hoogste berg Ida (ook wel Psiloritis genaamd) ligt in het midden van het departement en reikt tot een hoogte van 2456 meter. Een autotocht door de Amari-vallei in het departement Rethymnon is een aanrader. Begin bij het dorp Agia Foteini en zie de prachtige olijfgaarden, de Panagia kerk in Thronos, de Penagia kerk in Meronas, de vervallen Agios Ioannis kerk bij Kardaki, het oorlogsmonument net buiten Ano Meros, de ruine bij Vizari, de kerk Agia Anna (oudste fresco's uit 1225) en het mooie uitzicht op de Idi bij Amarie en de venetiaanse gebouwen Moni Asomaton (in oase met palmen). De tocht is ongeveer 90 kilometer. Evenals in Chania komen ook de 'careta-careta' schildpadden hier aan de noordkust aan land om hun eieren te leggen.
Mooie stranden vind je in Episkopi, Adelianos Kampos, Panormo, Bali, Trioptera, Agios Pavlos, Kerame. Bekende toeristische havenplaatsen zijn, naast de stad Rethymnon, Agia Galini en Plakias.
